SELECTED POSTS

This page, NEWS & UPDATES which is actually the index page of this website has grown into a huge database of my almost daily ramblings of all stuff I hold dear to my heart, including gossips of the most sordid kind. For your convenience, I have posted a list of posts which I thought is pretty informative in my own way that you might find interesting. The list itself may be long but those selected few are the ones I thought drives home the point I wanted to make. Do check them out in MY POINT IS [Comments & Opinions].

SERIES' SUMMARIES

Sometime in 2004 I began reviewing selected series in an episode by episode way, where I called these reviews EPISODIC THOUGHTS. These thoughts are mostly summaries of each and every episode with my opinion of that episode included in it as well. I may not provide the most in depth summaries but I am very proud of the fact that I could keep the writing on such a long winded basis each and every night for the entirety of the series. I don't do this for each and every series though because it kills a lot of brain cells, mine as well as fellow netizens who often joined in the discussion by posting informative stuff. These thoughts are still open for feedback and discussion. Do check them all out in REVIEWS where it is indicated with an  [E] next to my name.

OFFBEAT STUFF

There is this one section in here that features offbeat stuff that are not entertainment based. The section is known as FUNN STUFF [COMMENTS & OPINIONS].

PERSONAL FAVOURITES

There are 3 sections in here that contain my personal favourites of all kinds. THE DDGs [COMMENTS & OPINIONS] which features specially made websites by myself with info & all related stuff of my favourite stars or stars I like to talk about, MEDIA & MUSIC FILES [DOWNLOADS] which has my favourite VODs and music files, most of them are taken from Chinese & Korean dramas & movies and some of which I am hosting for my net friends and THE STORYTELLERS [WEBSITES], where you'll find stories written by amateur writers like you and I.

Do check them all out!

New Layout & Atkins Diet
Permanent link Post a Comment

I am improving on the present layout, meaning a new layout change this weekend if I am satisfied with the result. I come out with the weirdest layout. I like this present one, but I find it too elaborate, too restrictive. My new layout will have the same principles but an open space concept. I even have a new logo, a weird looking one but still somewhat a decent looking weird banner. Thus far the layout I am not changing is the one for my individual reviews. I think that is good enough. But this one, I am just giving is some open space concept, to make it look somewhat bigger when it is the same. I kinda like it, but it takes some getting use to. As for my Shaunsation, this concept was for my Shaunsation and then I realise I want this for my main page. So it's back to drawing board for my Shaunsation. I wish I could do some nice flash layout but don't know how. I have a concept in mind of Shaunsation. In fact all my layouts are pretty the same actually. Difference is either got box or no box! Talk about originality.

Coming up reviews by me : The Driving Power, Not Just A Pretty Face and some really old reviews. This weekend. Meanwhile, just to drop a note to say Hi, Bye, and Yeah!

Oh yeah, one question. Anyone ever done Atkins Diet before? I mean it sounds great but any side effects like serious carbohydrate withdrawal symptoms? Anyone here tried it before? Some comments will be most welcomed. You know I am Asian, is Atkins workable?

funn,
atkins gives you quick result. you can lose the weight but can't maintain it and will gain it back. it's definitely not good for your health in the long run. i learned in my health psych class that weight watchers program is the only one with some scientific evidence.

aIYAH, just post ONCE enough lar!

I saw this documentary and I am reading the book by Dr Atkins. It sounds dangerous but there is a logic to it. So far Atkins has been around for 30 years or so but no reports of anyone dying from it. But I read of people losing 150 pounds!! The principles are so against what I have learned, like eat fruits, less meat, more vege, low fat ... It's interesting but I wonder, anyone TRIED Atkins before?

Personally, I dun recommend the diet...

One of the things that I dun agree with about the Atkins diet is that it discourages the consumption of fruits and vegetables, which any nutritionist will tell you is a big no no cos it means removing lots of essential vitamins and minerals and fibre.

Also, it has been scientifically proven that high consumption levels of saturated fats and protein, and cutting fruits and vegetables from the diet, leads to major health risks such as colon cancer and heart disease. There is also a problem of not getting enough calcium, leading to osteoporosis in later life. However, this is instead something that Atkins propagates as the major component of the diet.

The fact that no one has died from it doesn't mean that no one will. Such effects often takes a long time to show up. For example, the reason why smokers engage in the illusion of invincibility is because the ill effects of smoking usually only occur much later, which people can't see in the present and see no urgency to change their habits.

The diet that worked for me was to cut down on carbs and meat, while eating more fruits and vegetables and beancurd. However, DO NOT totally cut of one of more food groups in your diet. As the experts always say, eat in moderation.

Some facts of the Atkins diet:
1) Has been shown to cause perpectual PMS (ie. mood changes)
2) Effective short-term loss but most of this is lost in water. There is a 40% drop-out rate.
3) Diet still relies of the principle - eat les than you burn.

Am currently studying this for my module on Evaluating Health Claims which is why I have these info at hand ;)

Anyway, something to ponder on...Recently there was this news that said Asians are actually more obese than we think we are and now the benchmark of obesity in Asians has been changed to 22.9, this, according to the report, means that 1 in 3 Singaporeans (at least) are considered overweight cos Asians have more fats in their body mass as compared to Westerners. Could it be something to do with our traditionally high-carb diet combined with the new high-protein and saturated fats diet?

Pearl, I am very interested in what you wrote ...

"The diet that worked for me was to cut down on carbs and meat, while eating more fruits and vegetables and beancurd. However, DO NOT totally cut of one of more food groups in your diet. As the experts always say, eat in moderation."

You cut down on carbs! I am reading the book and it never says do away with vege, it just says don't eat certain veges, and never say don't eat fruits, but don't eat certain fruits but you can't eat fruits for the induction period. You can eat carbs, but limited.

I wonder too..you know Asians eat loads of carbs. Rice! Flour! Everything we eat are either rice or flour. But we eat also vege, meat and sugar as well but lots of carbs which is why I find it so hard to do Atkins as I think about it. I mean we eat Mee for breakfast lunch and dinner. Mee is made of flour and flour is banned in Atkins.

I can see the logic of Atkins diet, I can see why carbs is harmful. It never says just eat red meat, it says it all you want but he never said fried it in peanut oil, I bet they say grill it and grilling and steaming is healthy. But no bread, no ice-cream, like death to me.

I quite like the Atkins idea...the so called long term effects studies have shown it improves health. So who do we believe? The fans of Gardenia breads of the Atkins fans?

I am rather confused.

atkins does work and i'm speaking from experience. I don't know about the long term effects but it works. I lost 15 lbs while i was on it but i couldn't stay w/ the diet cuz being asian, i can't live without my rice, and noodles etc... but if you're committed to it, it does work. One of my friends who is on the diet and follows its strict guidelines, lost 122 lbs over a 15 months period. She is still doing the diet and swears by it. Most of the people i talked to who stopped the diet said that they stopped because they couldn't keep up with the no carbs rule and not because it didn't work. It did, however, made me moody, really moody.

BCN, thanks for your insight. I haven't started and I feel it will be very difficult as we are Asians. And no articles on Atkins were written in the perspective of an Asian you know. But you mentioned being really moody. Moody because you couldn't eat your favourite foods that are sugar laden or really moody because well why were you moody?? I do hope though your friend who lost 122 pounds could comment on how she broke away from the "Asian" food trap!! Anyway congrats on the pounds lost!
