daily ramblings of all stuff I hold dear to
my heart, including gossips of the most
sordid kind. For your convenience, I have
posted a list of posts which I thought is

SERIES' SUMMARIES
Sometime in 2004 I began
reviewing selected
series in an episode by
episode way, where I
called these reviews
EPISODIC THOUGHTS.
These thoughts are
mostly summaries of each
and every episode with
my opinion of that
episode included in it
as well. I may not
provide the most in
depth summaries but I am
very proud of the fact
that I could keep the
writing on such a long
winded basis each and
every night for the
entirety of the series.
I don't do this for each
and every series though
because it kills a lot
of brain cells, mine as
well as fellow netizens
who often joined in the
discussion by posting
informative stuff. These
thoughts are still open
for feedback and
discussion. Do check
them all out in
REVIEWS where it is
indicated with an

Updates - Media Permanent link ▫ ▫
Great new items added in Downloads > Media > Series! Well maybe not since most of you have them!
I just added Jewel In The Palace themesong, the Kelly Chan version and the original version.
I just caught the Jewel fever you know, quite an interesting show but everything they show about plotting, I just never get it! Maybe someone can explain, why did the father of our heroine poisoned the king's mother??
Anyway, Malaysian TV channels are showing this show.
8TV is showing it again on weekdays I think at 3pm, but not very sure. You can catch this channel on ASTRO channel 18.
ASTRO Wah Lai Toi Channel 30 is showing it on weekends, Saturdays and Sundays, 4pm to 7pm, each day 3 episodes straight. But have to wait 5 days before the next batch you know. As of today, ASTRO stopped at episode 6. Next Saturday will be 7-12.
Good thing about ASTRO's broadcast is it is by TVB and you get Bowie Lam in 3 minutes or so giving us some interesting facts about the culture portrayed in the series. And my sister was right on the part why the Korean words are so funny looking. She once said, and I suspect jokingly that Chinese words were too difficult for the Korean peasants who can't remember the proper way to write the Chinese words so they simplified it to what it is today. Not quite so. Amazingly this series said back then they wrote Chinese words, and only the rich and powerful can afford to learn to read and write. So to enable the peasants to learn the words easier, the new writing system was created. Well, close to what my sister said.
And I didn't know Korea back then had caste system! Very interesting, all thanks to Bowie!

Just finished the series. "Jewel" is one of my all-time favorite series. I now understand what the hype was all about. --tutti
Now, the Emperor's mother is a very jealous and vengeful woman, and I think scratched her husband with her fingernails for being with other women(I heard it from another forum).
And for that, her husband divorced her and locked her up.
Probably afraid of the power she might get when her son becomes the next Emperor, the current Emperor (the guy shooting arrows) and his ministers who are in trouble because they are on the side of the new Empress, decide to poison her and eliminate this threat.
But her maniac son found out and started hunting down all the officials involved (see, the higher officials did not escape, except the one who fell of his horse and didn't take part).
So JG's father was hunted down along with others (as JG's BF says later on about those who hid).
It basically turned into a witchhunt with a lot of backstabbing and a chance to eliminate your political enemies.
I do wonder, was the Emperor back in those days allowed only ONE wife?
As you will see during the maid's training, Emperor have lots of wives, but that Empress (the dead mum) was exceptionally jealous.
Unfortunately yes, the Emperor could have anyone women inside his palace if he wanted to and no one else was to touch them. I think in ep 3 or 4, Lady Han was talking with another maid on how they were short of maids because the Emperor had them in his room.
But whether he promotes you or sees you again is another matter (as you will see later).
These maids are kind of like the Chinese "Sau Nui" who get elected as a candidates for consorts, but meanwhile have to work as maids.
So technically the young king now can take Lady Han and make her his woman?
A few questions.
1. The young handsome king that young JG met was the brother of the assassinated King?
2. JG came in as a maid of a certain rank. I saw other children wearing different uniforms, like white. Does that mean they're of lower rank but still are the King's women?
3. There are no eunuchs in the Korean palace?
4. How come some wear their hair in thick braids and some not? Someone of a certain age must wear that?
5. That what's her name, Lady Chui issit? That one with the plotting and all? Why she hates JG's mom so much? What is she plotting about anyway???
I really like the new king thus far because he's like the only good looking one right now whilst all teh girls look alike. Very confusing.
Anonymous (what is your name?!), if your version is the correct one, then what Elizabeth said about the empress is totally the opposite and the Empress not that bad!
Can someone confirm? Still as confused as ever.
Anyway, you get a rank when you sleep with the Emperor, and you don't have to cook anymore, but you could just stay at that rank with no power or maids, which is pretty bad. You may only get to sleep with the Emperor once (as you will see later on).
You get raised in ranks when you get pregnant, and when you actually have the baby.
"So technically the young king now can take Lady Han and make her his woman?"
Yes, but I don't think he likes older women. If he does, Lady Cheng is in more trouble! :D
"1. The young handsome king that young JG met was the brother of the assassinated King?"
Yes.
"2. JG came in as a maid of a certain rank. I saw other children wearing different uniforms, like white. Does that mean they're of lower rank but still are the King's women?"
Pink is kids/trainees. Red is "Nei Ren" meaning you are fully qualified, light green means "Lady" which rules a group of girls, dark green is the highest rank, either "The Highest Lady" of a section.
White is a much lower rank, of the health nurses. Light blue is a training nurse.
"3. There are no eunuchs in the Korean palace?"
There is. The guy who follows the Emperor around and is in dark green with the tall hat. The one who is good friends with Lady Cheng.
"4. How come some wear their hair in thick braids and some not? Someone of a certain age must wear that?"
You get the thick braids when you get a powerful rank, like "Lady". If you notice, the colour of the cushion in the hair also changes with rank (in the kitchen and amongst the concubines).
"5. That what's her name, Lady Chui issit? That one with the plotting and all? Why she hates JG's mom so much? What is she plotting about anyway???"
Lady Choi. Her family wants to monopolise the trade deals with the government and control the ministers by doing what they want (like poisoning or killing people with food via poisons, or foods that are detrimental to one's health condition).
The only way to do that is to become the "Highest Lady", which happens to fall into the hands of the Choi ladies every generation.
JG's mother found out Lady Choi poisoning the evil Emperor's grandmother while watching her cook, so she had to be killed.
There are new plots they hatch. Just wait and enjoy!
Too bad there are only too good looking guys in the whole series.
From here (DJG chicago forum):

Quoted from Walter's words:
"Queen Yoon, (mother of crown prince Yeonsan-kun) had been deposed. She'd apparantly been pretty bad, brought disgrace on the king, so he exiled her to a temple. She was not supposed to leave, but she defied the king by stepping outside the temple. (which doesn't seem like a major infraction) so the king sent an order to execute her with poison.
Most likely it has more to do with factions maneuvering than with her actual behavior. "
"Related thing I'm figuring out. In the first episode Jang Guem's mother was poisoned because she discovered that Lady Choi (the previous High Court Lady, not the current lady Choi ) was serving food to the Queen Grandmother which would sicken the Queen Grandmother. This was mentioned in a recent episode, it was because she suspected the Choi family, and wanted to start cutting into their monopoly. Also, Choi Pil financed the overthow of the evil king Yeonsan-kun (or was his name different when he became king, most princes change their name when they become king) who was replaced with the current, good, king. It was Yeonsan-kun's queens grandmother who the former Lady Choi was poisoning. So, the overthrow was largely cooreographed to ensure Choi and Ok could increase their control and wealth; since Ok brought the current king to power he gained a very powerful position in the court."

"Queen Yun [Pop-yong Wang-hu] (d. when forced to take poison, 1483, bur. Hoe-myo, So-sam-nung, Kyongjo), banished from court due to her temper 1480"
Hope this clears a bit!
I saw the other Korean actor today on TV. Quite good looking though I would have wished Jang Donggun (hope I got the name right) was in that show instead.
