SELECTED POSTS

This page, NEWS & UPDATES which is actually the index page of this website has grown into a huge database of my almost daily ramblings of all stuff I hold dear to my heart, including gossips of the most sordid kind. For your convenience, I have posted a list of posts which I thought is pretty informative in my own way that you might find interesting. The list itself may be long but those selected few are the ones I thought drives home the point I wanted to make. Do check them out in MY POINT IS [Comments & Opinions].

SERIES' SUMMARIES

Sometime in 2004 I began reviewing selected series in an episode by episode way, where I called these reviews EPISODIC THOUGHTS. These thoughts are mostly summaries of each and every episode with my opinion of that episode included in it as well. I may not provide the most in depth summaries but I am very proud of the fact that I could keep the writing on such a long winded basis each and every night for the entirety of the series. I don't do this for each and every series though because it kills a lot of brain cells, mine as well as fellow netizens who often joined in the discussion by posting informative stuff. These thoughts are still open for feedback and discussion. Do check them all out in REVIEWS where it is indicated with an  [E] next to my name.

OFFBEAT STUFF

There is this one section in here that features offbeat stuff that are not entertainment based. The section is known as FUNN STUFF [COMMENTS & OPINIONS].

PERSONAL FAVOURITES

There are 3 sections in here that contain my personal favourites of all kinds. THE DDGs [COMMENTS & OPINIONS] which features specially made websites by myself with info & all related stuff of my favourite stars or stars I like to talk about, MEDIA & MUSIC FILES [DOWNLOADS] which has my favourite VODs and music files, most of them are taken from Chinese & Korean dramas & movies and some of which I am hosting for my net friends and THE STORYTELLERS [WEBSITES], where you'll find stories written by amateur writers like you and I.

Do check them all out!

Fantasy Hotel Gets Complaints by HK Tour Industry
Permanent link Post a Comment

NEWS HERE.

Very interesting piece of news and a must read. I have made some comments (scroll down the many sub posts and find Funn Lim). The replies were like these; some crude, some polite, some sarcastic and except for me, I think all of them feel the impending law suit is silly, stupid, waste of time, etc. I am of a different view as expressed (I hope) eloquently in there. I made some comparisons with White Flame and Monkey King series.

My view is simple; broadcast responsibility and not a free hand Freedom of Speech right. I am not into censorship, I hate it but I recognise the fact that perhaps unintentionally demeaning a certain sector in the war of TV ratings should not go unnoticed. It would also mean TVB can't do everything and anything they like.

I haven't watch Fantasy Hotel but I am very curious now because HK rarely sues TV for anything, even stars rarely sue mags for defamation (probably the law on defamation/slander/libel is not very strong there). There must be some valid points. It teaches me though that sometimes I may enjoy a series and laugh and forget about it but never take anything at face value. Never assume people will know what's real and what's not and never asume it's just TV. And now I wonder if I am in that profession how would I feel?

Some said what about series about bad lawyers? Ahhh but nobody cares for a lawyer. TV series glamourise the profession which is really not glamarous at all. Corrupt cops? Lately TVB toned down on the corrupt cops theme, and there was a time there wasn't one and police was shown in a terribly fair and professional lie to the point of disbelief.

I want your views. You don't have to agree with me but please don't write that I am over sensitive and I am too judgmental and I am making an issue out of a non-issue. I think it's because I see the issue differently from you. Read the posts and tell me;

Do you think a TV series which portray a profession or a sector of people negatively (maybe innocently but still knowingly) for comic relief should be exempted from lawsuits if the person or sector so demeaned in the quest for ratings and entertainment feel it is not the correct representation? Is it really JUST tv?

sammie :

My opinion is that tv life will always be TV life not a reality so whatever characters they potrayed is meant for pure entertainment . I don't see why people are so serious about it . I mean look at the US they can even film a movie about their own President and bad judgement he make but we don't see people suing those movie directors about it . Lately TVB series have become quite cliche and I do understand sometimes they want to spice "things" up . Gosh they should lighten up !

I think sueing a TV series is overreacting, especially a comedy such as TCTU and Fantasy Hotel. If a documentary or a series with a 'this story is based on real life event' notice in it, distort the truth, then there is ground for lawsuit because viewers expect these productions to tell the truth. But for other series and movies, everyone knows that they are fiction. Viewers nowadays are not so gullible. Give more credits to the viewers.

I think it's unbelievable that Charmaine's character can become a capable nurse overnight in White Flame and I think the interview session for cadet intake in The Academy shows the police force in not a very good light. But do I believe them to be true? No. Do I have less faith in nurses in HK after I watch White Flame? No. Because I realise that these kind of series are just fiction/art for my entertainment.

Btw, isn't it a bit of a double standard that it is OK to potray the lawyer profession badly, but not the other professions? "No one thinks highly of the lawyer profession, so we can defame them as much as possible. But a nurse/doctor/tourguide/insurance agent? How dare they do such a thing!! How dare they act so irresponsibly?!!" :(

In one of the Fantasy Hotel’s episodes, a group of tourists gathered in a room and Michael Tao arrived and introduced himself as a wealthy prince from Middle East. In the scene, Michael’s character lied about his background and then deceived the tourists to buy poor quality jades. In another episode, his best friend (played by Wayne Lai) played the role of prince, gave the same ‘speech’ and cheated another new group of tourists. The best part is when Melissa Ng (as a new staff) was introduced to the rest of the Michael / Wayne’s colleagues, she proved she can perform the job by echoing the same ‘speech’ in front all of them! Did I get the wrong message – Michael and Wayne are not the only ‘bad eggs’ in the industry but also all the staff in the company? Other so-called funny scenes are all the tourists (young or old – together with their luggage) running to the station and in another scene, no hotel’s rooms available for the tourists.

If I just focus on Michael, Melissa and Wayne, I may find this drama is very funny and entertaining. But, I could not find the same if I look at the tourists. I can’t imagine if I send my parents to enjoy holiday in HK but end up in one of the mentioned situations.

Of course, our background, education and experience will lead us to see things differently.

I could not comment other series (i.e. White Flame or Monkey King) as I seldom watch TVB series. When I found out that HK Tour Guide Association is taking legal action against TVB, I believe even if they win, it will do more harm to its tourism industry. Too much bad publicity is not a good idea.

Look at Korea, their tourism association will collaborate with their filmmaker to present their culture and best sceneries to their audiences thru movies/dramas (Winter Sonata, Autumn in My Heart, All In or Jewel in the Palace). The impact? All my friends and colleagues flocked to Korea! And yet, in the drama the actor/actress did not mention about tourism at all.

Thanks for the points in contention. I can see why there are law suits. That's a very negative portrayal. It;s one thing to show clumsy tour guides but cheating ones? I can see what's so offensive.
