SERIES' SUMMARIES
Sometime in 2004 I began
reviewing selected
series in an episode by
episode way, where I
called these reviews
EPISODIC THOUGHTS.
These thoughts are
mostly summaries of each
and every episode with
my opinion of that
episode included in it
as well. I may not
provide the most in
depth summaries but I am
very proud of the fact
that I could keep the
writing on such a long
winded basis each and
every night for the
entirety of the series.
I don't do this for each
and every series though
because it kills a lot
of brain cells, mine as
well as fellow netizens
who often joined in the
discussion by posting
informative stuff. These
thoughts are still open
for feedback and
discussion. Do check
them all out in
REVIEWS where it is

Depressing movies Permanent link ▫ ▫
I just finished watching Chopper, Grave of the Fireflies and Million Dollar Baby and I feel so utterly depressed. Chopper was depressing simply because Eric Bana managed to make a cold blooded hot tempered killer into some seriously charming and that is scary. Grave of the Fireflies was depressing because it involves children and war and from the 1st second of the movie, we know they died. What makes it less depressing is that it was about WWII and being able to detached myself from feeling sorry for the subject matter is of course inhuman but totally understandable. The only reason I felt sad because it was animation. Everytime someone mentioned the Great Empire or Long Live The Emperor (I was watching the English version) I cringed because I am Chinese. Enough said. Shallow but understandable. THen I watched Million Dollar Baby and what a depressing movie. Not great movie but entertaining in a very morbid depressing way. Slow but interesting.
And now finally I will be watching American Psycho soon and I am afraid I might feel even more depressed. I should watch a happy movie. I was thinking seriously of finally putting that darn DVD of Brokeback Mountain into my darn DVD player but somehow didn't feel like it at all. I am sorry to say, that all the praises heaped on the main two leads somehow is turning me off! I should watch it. Even my friend is telling me Jake Gyllenhaal deserves the accolades (more than Heath apparently) but then she liked him in Bubble Boy and she even thought he would make a great Batman. The only movie I ever liked Heath Ledger in was that Monster Ball I think where he died minutes into the movie, more like shocking than amazing performance. His other movies were in my opinion forgettable. Jake on the other hand scored better. I recently saw some photos of his and he looked pretty handsome. I liked Day After Tomorrow (or is that the title? The one about climate change and disaster)and I have yet to see his other critically acclaimed performance in a movie I think called Jarhead or something. The rest I can't bear to watch. I simply find him boring. Truth be told any other actors would have done well in Brokeback Mountain. Ang Lee is a pretty tough director, he can squeeze some acting chops from the young ones. I need motivation to watch Brokeback Mountain. Is it a happy movie? Will it make me smile? Or will it make me squirm? Or do I have to watch Babe to lift my spirits? Torino is doing it for me. I just feel so excited and happy watching snowboaders doing well, snowboarding.
What's wrong with Brokeback Mountain my dear Funn Lim? Why can't I just bloody watch it??
Anyway just saw an ad that Chariots Of Fire is showing later tonight at 10pm over at ASTRO. Finally got a chance to watch this critically acclaimed movie.

You have to watch it. Christian Bale is utterly charming (as psycho as he is) and you get to see Reese Witherspoon before she got famous!
Not to watch before or after meal, though....
Watch the movie first and see the actors' performance for yourself before u made statements like this:-
"Truth be told any other actors would have done well in Brokeback Mountain."
ok?
I'm chinese too, but I still felt sorry for the commoners who got bombed. They were not the people who attacked China. They were not the people who tortured the chinese and raped the chinese women. They were as much victims of their country leader's ego trip and power hunger as the citizens of the conquered nations. Your sentiment is understandable (many people are still boycotting Japanese goods now), but I disagree with it. :)
Btw, this anime is based on a novel that is semi-autobiographical. Part of the story in the novel was what the author and his sister went through during the war. The sister did die of malnutrition while the author himself survived.
Kidd, I saw exactly what you saw in the animation. There is no need to identify the bombers since those who knows history knows. But I so happen to have 2 people nagging at me for watching this movie and for feeling apathy, sympathy and sorry for the two characters. I told them "This is about children and war, and what more can be more universally honest and moving than that?". I do not disagree with the anger felt by the people who suffered during those years but I understand also it is the little people who suffers whilst the big guns escaped. The biggest is of course the emperor himself which was why I was uncomfortable but I was not unmoved by their plight. I wouldn't call it the greatest impact and I didn't think the anime was particularly nice. Itwould have been better as live action. What I liked abt it is even their own kind treat them like shit which is sad and the ending was depressing but in a way happy. They escaped their torture and suffering, in death of course.
As for my statement on everybody else can do as well or better in Brokeback Mountain, I stand by my statement. They're not remarkable actor and I say the same thing about George Clooney and Keira Knightley. I have no doubt seeing the movie will not change my opinion.
What disgusts me is even now some denied any torture ever happened, whether to jews or to chinese or to koreans or countless others. To compare so blatantly that Bush is like Hitler is really missing the point. Hitler is in a class of his own, and so was the emperor of Japan and hos goons. What is infuriating, not one word of sincere apology. Not one. So if anyone watching Grave of the Fireflies knowing it is about the Japanese and yet did not feel much apathy is prefectly understandable. I do not feel that way of course. I felt sad watching that movie but not terribly sad. Because the story could have been better and the animation could have been better. You're right abt character studies. I was wondering why he didn't muster up his pride and just go back to his aunt or take the money out from the bank earlier. But a kid being kid wouldn't have such long future plans. So take away the identity, the very core of the story is moving.
The movie that moved me to tears and made quite an impact was Colours of Paradise. It was a simple story but the ending in a way made me cry and yet it was a good ending. Again death was a solution. You should watch this movie. Amazing storyteller, same guy who did Children of Heaven.
It's pretty good animation for an anime that was made in 1988. :)

I agree that they should have at least apologised. The Germans did. Also agree that it's too much to compare Bush to Hitler. Bush didn't torture innocent citizens and do experiment on them.
It sounds strange, but, many years ago, when there was some issue with the Japanese again that were related to WW2, my grandma (she has since passed away) who has lived through the Japanese accupation in Malaya, commented (not exact quote) "Why need to bring this up again? The past is the past." It's pretty ironic that someone who has lived through that peroid can let go, but people who were not even born then can be so indignant about it.
But I agree that the Japanese should definitely oppologise and admit their wrong, especially to the ex-pleasure women.

I haven't watch 'Colours of Paradise' though I have the VCD. But I have watch 'Children of Heaven' (because of your recommendation years ago :D). It's a nice movie, but it's not that impactful to me. Maybe when I see it again now I may have a different view. I especially don't like the ending. I don't like the sister's reaction when she found out that the brother didn't manage to get the shoes for her.
I was wondering why he didn't muster up his pride and just go back to his aunt or take the money out from the bank earlier.
Someone in the imdb board explain that the bank was closed during war, so, he can't go. When he took the money from the bank, it was after the war has stopped. Also, even if he has the money, it was no use because no one would sell him anything (as shown in the movie). People just lived on food ration give by the government. When the siblings leave their aunt's home, they have gone outside the system and are not eligible for rations anymore.
Lastly, I don't like the idea of death as a solution. It's very poetic and dramatic, good for a tearjerker-pull-at-your-heartstring movie, but it's a very persimistic idea. That's why I disagree when people commented that Yuk Ying and Onn sin get a better ending than Yi Shun and Yu Fei.
